Title: White Bass & White Perch Report 5/15/08 Post by: Zib on May 16, 2008, 09:52:13 am Me & Rob headed out of the Ecorse launch Thursday night on the DR to attempt to catch some walleyes even though all the reports I've seen said the white bass were running wild.
We made 2 drifts from US Steel down to Mud Island. We caught nothing but white bass & white perch (up to 14"). They were so stacked in there that we had a very hard time getting our jigs to reach bottom without getting hit. I would drop my jigs down & think I hit bottom but I was hitting fish instead. The screen on my graph was mostly black from all the huge schools of fish. I'd pull in a white bass then drop my jig back down then bam, pull in a white perch, then a white bass, then a white perch etc etc. We got tired of it & headed in early. Had it not been a school night I would have taken my son out there. He would of had a blast catching white bass hand over fist. I think I'll stay off the river for a few more weeks until the white bass & perch move out. Me & Rob will be going to Kent Lake on Sunday to put some LM in the boat. ;D I'm going to stay home on Saturday to get my gear ready for our annual smallmouth trip up to my parents place in Presque Isle Harbor. Plus I need to buy 2 new tires for my boat trailer since they both have big bulges in the side from the cords inside breaking. >:( Title: Re: White Bass & White Perch Report 5/15/08 Post by: h2o on May 16, 2008, 10:18:32 am New tires, wise to replace before pulling at all, there current condition is a disaster in the making buddy boy. Love catching whites. Could anchor and stay there all day. Fun action and they are scrapy little bugger. Nice report Zibster.
h2o<--especially being with son. Title: Re: White Bass & White Perch Report 5/15/08 Post by: Zib on May 16, 2008, 10:29:27 am I didn't pull the boat with bad tires when I left the house. The first tire went bad the first time I went to Moot with my son. I put my spare on & yesterday on my way to the ramp the other tire went. Damn tires are 3 years old & should have lasted longer than that. There's very little wear on those tires. I go from having motor problems to trailer problems. Just my luck I guess. ;D
Title: Re: White Bass & White Perch Report 5/15/08 Post by: h2o on May 16, 2008, 11:06:52 am It's only tires. No one got hurt. Just think how good you'll feel with new rubber on your baby SON!!!!
h2o<--says just didn't want you to take any chances on bad tires. I'm a tire nut. I never had much luck there but than again, i never been there that early in the season My best bait in there has been the perch wiggle wart. On hot & muggy days I've burned that lure through the weeds & have caught plenty of nice size LM & SM as well as walleye. Kent has always been hit or miss for me. I either get skunked or catch some nice ones. I've never fished there this early in the season. I'm usually there on father’s day with my son helping him catch gills. Senkos are a good bait to use along I-96 off the East ramp. Rob can help on what to use on the other side of I96. He has a few lures up in those trees along I-96. ;D The forecast is calling for thunder storms so looks like Kent will have to wait. :( Title: Re: White Bass & White Perch Report 5/15/08 Post by: h2o on May 16, 2008, 08:20:15 pm Place is loaded with Carp. Corn and a bobber will do wonders. But I am not into carp all that much... No bobber, small hook and a slip sinker, put two kernels of corn on the hook toss it out far, chum the area and hold on. My son has caught 100's there.
