Remembering Ice Fishing by Muskie Bob Brunner, Sr.
I remember of all the fun I used to have on the ice. I haven'y ice fished but once in the last 30 years. But I recall spudding a hole and setting on a paint bucket and jigging a mousie or little thin spoons. I do remember how cold it was most of the time. We didn't have the cold weather gear that is out there today. Fishing for Perch and Blue Gill etc. through the ice is great fun. Never stay fishing in one hole for too long if the fish are not biting as all you have to do is move like 10 feet and you could find fish. Using a fish finder now adays is the way to go. You can find evrey thing that way drop offs and weeds and anything that is down there. The live baits are the same today as when I fished on the ice so I won't go into details about that. I prefered white grubs myself but they are hard to come by in the winter. Shanty fishing is much more fun to me. When the water is clean its great to watch the Pike move in on a bait.. Dad and I would use shiners of about 6 inches to get the Pike. That was the bait we would also put on the tip ups.. Spearing was one way we took Pike and that is when we used the decoys to lure the Pike. I have done it all over the years from live and spearing to trolling and casting plus jigging now and then (Like watching grass grow) Have fun this winter and be careful as the soft water wll come back before you realize it.. Bob
