Opening morning came & we didn't hear a single gunshot for the first 35 mins of legal hunting. Usually we hear shots before legal time & at least a dozen shot in the first hour but not this year. We heard 7 shots in the first hour & about a dozen total before noon. There were plenty of hunters in the woods but the deer weren't to be seen as we heard from guys later on.
About 8:00 Am opening morning Todd seen the first deer. A doe came through being chased by a buck & they stopped in front of Todd but couldn’t shoot until he could verify that the buck had at least 3 points on one side (new law in U.P. for those w/a combo lic, 4 pts on 1 side for the restricted tag). The buck looked to be a 4 point but Todd had to wait until the deer turned his head. The deer turned his head & revealed 2 more points (6-pt) & Todd was ready to shoot but the buck looked behind him & there was an 8-pointer behind some trees so Todd waited for the 8 to come out but the 6-pt started chasing the doe again & the 8-pointer took off around Todd.
At 8:06 AM I hear something coming up the other side of the ridge that I'm on so I look behind me & see a flash of brown then to my left comes a doe being chased by what I thought was a 4 pt but they stopped behind a clump of trees & I couldn't see if the buck had 3 points on 1 side or not. I pull off my face mask to get a better look through my scope & through the brush I see the 8 pointer looking at me but before I could get a shot off because both bucks started chasing the doe.

That ended up being the only deer that had come near my blind the whole trip. Normally we wouldn't have thought to shoot the 6-pt but because Todd is laid off & needs to eat we would have shot it.
At 4:45 PM Tuesday night a much smaller 6-pt came up the trail into the field that Todd was hunting. Todd verified it had at least 3-pts on one side & didn't hesitate to shoot this time. The deer was quartering towards him & he hit it in the lungs with his 30-30 at about 40-45 yards, the deer turned to go back to where it came from & ran 50 yards & dropped.

Once again it was a fun time at the Tally Ho in Curtis. The people watching was very entertaining. The quote of the night was "Hey drunk bitch, come here."
