DR Musky 6/12/10
« on: June 12, 2010, 06:56:21 pm »

Hit the river this morning with Alex to jig for musky (my 1st time targeting them in the river) from 6:30 to 3:30. Within 10 minutes of the first drift a 44” was in the boat on a Red October tube. Ended up going 3 for 7. Lost one as it jumped & the other 3 didn’t get a good hook-set as 2 of them hit at the top of a 4’ jig stroke so nowhere to set the hook on those guys. Gold Red October tubes along with Bondy Baits in Vomit Shad & Burbot. Also the Bondy Bait in Redhorse Sucker lost 3 on the same drift. Also had 2 white bass that tried to “Get it On” with some Bondy Baits.  Grin

Now I just need to recoup for about a week because my arm is about to fall off from the heavy jigging.  Cheesy

44” taken on a tube.

Taken on a Bondy Bait.

You got to try jigging the SCR. I know of a few places that huge skis are taken from every year.

Mike, whats the process of jigging for ski's? Is it pretty much as walleye? Keep it streight and keep it right off the bottom?

Like walleye except higher lift (3' to 4' vs. 6"-8" for walleye) & let it fall slower.

I'll stick to the DR until the bite slows down. No need to drive over an hour when I only need to drive 15 mins. I'll be hitting the N, M, S channels & the Sni once July rolls around.

Outstanding, guys.  icon_salut Andy, when jigging for `ski`s use long 3 to 4 foot strokes and let the lure fall on a tight line. Alot of the hits come on the fall and there shouldn`t be any slack in the line so the hit can be detected and a good hookset be implemented.

Nice going men. Soon you'll be holding Bondy Ski's. You will.

Keep it up and learn the spots.

Very good catch men.

The big Muskie seem to get more active in the SCR during the 2nd half of the fishing season. I have caught and have seen more monsters caught towards the fall. There seems to be more Pike caught in the first half of the season and more Muskie during the 2nd half. They seem to get more common around August and pretty much stay that way into the fall. They also seem to frequent the same areas year after year.

An old fishing buddy of mine (who is no longer with us) used to pull at least 3 out of the same hole while walleye fishing every year and just about every one was at least keeper length.

I would think that the numbers of Muskie caught in the SCR would greatly increase if someone was targeting them with larger Muskie baits instead of getting them on accident on walleye and salmon tackle

Musky are on the move lots being caught out on Lake St Clair pulling everything but the kitchen sink....Some still being caught in the Detroit River jigging and casting big baits like Woddies Mini Mees and JackFish Lures. Won't be long till they be showing up in the river for fall feed chasing the shad!
