Orchard Lake report 2/15/09
« on: February 15, 2009, 06:48:42 pm »

Nothing, zippo, nadda is all I can say. Started heading toward the Island about 1:30pm today and a little better than halfway I encountered what I thought might be a bad spot. Well I left my spud in the car (good move) so I used the tip of my toe to test this area out and with a little tap I broke open a hole the size of my boot. I saw more spots that looked the same just not as big so I turned around I wasn't chancing it. If anyone heads out there beware of the ice going out to the Island. There was no snow on these spots and it just didn't look right. I set up to the left of the launch in 33 fow and marked nothing from about 2:30-5pm. I cut a few more holes around me to see If I could mark anything but no dice. I think I'm putting the shanty away for the season and just keeping the bare essentials out just in case I have it in me to venture out again. Come on Spring....sorry I just can't help myself.- Scott

Thanks for the report Scott. 33ft of water is a long way down, glad you were on the lookout.

33 fow is what I fished in. I think I was over or near the shallow flat when I encountered the bad ice and the only thing I can think of why it was bad is maybe there are spring's coming from it that deteriorated the ice along with the rain and warm weather. I was heading for 22 fow off the SE tip of the island.

is orchard a spring fed lake? Moving water is what usually deteriorates the ice.

I'm not sure if it's a spring fed lake I was just taking it into consideration as a possibility. I have no idea why the ice was like that I'm just glad I avoided taking a swim.

As deep (120 foot hole) as Orchard is. I'm sure it is formed from the Glaciers. Should have springs along with rain water drainage.
