Verry common. Coil starts behaving erratically under heavy load. First thing I would change out too.

Launched yesterday and ran the crap out of the motor. She runs great for anywhere from a few minutes to 23 minutes then acts up. RPM decays from 4200 down to 3500 and then surges between 3200 and 3400. The shop technician says its got to be the carb. I have my doughts. We took the check vale out of the fuel tank fitting to see if it was sticking and starying for fuel. We bypassed the fuel filter & water seperator. We adjusted the carb's float. We even hooked up a fresh gas can also to rule out the tank's gas. The carb has been removed by me and the shop is sending it to a special carb shop in Seattle where the can check it out and even do a flow test. There is no missing in the engine so all the plugs, wires, and points are good. Should have the carb back by next Thursday. Hoping for the best as Salmon season opens soon in the Pacific Northwest.

The motor runs great, Just not at full power. I'm not able to stay up on plane unless above 3800 rpm. Burn lots of gas and not get to far like that.
Yep can drift but have a nice 8hp outboard honda to troll with and use in emergancies.
The next thing I will do is replace the fuel pump if this carb shop does not correct it.
I don't know what else to try.

OH, forgot to mention:
Joe's Carb in Seattle fixed the carb. They overhauled it and have a testing facility where they flow check it with fuel. They do all carbs, Auto, heavey equipment, aircraft, and marine.
They are alittle expensive but you can't beat their results with bench testing.
Going to try and attach pic of boat and truck.

Dynamite Gary, the fish you catch dwarf's ours.
I don't know about that. Many of the fish I've seen on this forum from the Great Lakes are pretty big. Seen some photos of some big pike.

Speaking of fish size. Check out my post in the fishing pictures section. That was printed in my local paper today. The biggest one I ever caught was about 50 pounds. Pacific Halibut are big fighters. Almost need a winch to get them off the bottem. May fisherman out here carry handguns or a shot gun to shoot that thing before they bring them in the boat. This being the boat technical section. I should mention that these pacific halibut if boated and come alive they can trash a boat quickly not to mention break peoples bones.
