How old is the COIL..  Maybe when it gets hot it fails.  Just a thought. check for cracks.

Verry common. Coil starts behaving erratically under heavy load. First thing I would change out too.

Launched yesterday and ran the crap out of the motor.
She runs great for anywhere from a few minutes to 23 minutes then acts up.
RPM decays from 4200 down to 3500 and then surges between 3200 and 3400.
The shop technician says its got to be the carb.
I have my doughts.
We took the check vale out of the fuel tank fitting to see if it was sticking and starying for fuel.
We bypassed the fuel filter & water seperator.
We adjusted the carb's float.
We even hooked up a fresh gas can also to rule out the tank's gas.
The carb has been removed by me and the shop is sending it to a special carb shop in Seattle where the can check it out and even do a flow test.
There is no missing in the engine so all the plugs, wires, and points are good.
Should have the carb back by next Thursday.
Hoping for the best as Salmon season opens soon in the Pacific Northwest.

The motor runs great, Just not at full power. I'm not  able to stay up on plane unless above 3800 rpm. Burn lots of gas and not get to far like that.

Yep can drift but have a nice 8hp outboard honda to troll with and use in emergancies.

The next thing I will do is replace the fuel pump if this carb shop does not correct it.

I don't know what else to try.

Well the problem is solved.

Got the carb back and installed it a few days ago.
Took the boat out yesterday and boy did it run.
I pushed the throttle up and within seconds we were on plane and flying accross the water. Scared me at first. Never ran that fast for me.

I noticed we were at 5,000 RPM - no wonder we were sailing like a speed boat.
The motor is redlined at 4,800 RPM so I throttled back to 4,500 and sped around the bay for about 1 1/2 hours.
The best I've ever got out of that engine was 4,200RPM's. I've had it from about 1997 I guess.
We got us a good running motor now. ':boat:'

As for the oil leak, I resealed the dip stick assembly with temp permatex the plyible type. Well I check for oil leak at about 30 minutes and 60 minutes and no leakage and the permatex was looking good.

Got back to the dock 15 or so minutes later and looked at the engine and had the oil leak again. Noticed the permatex had melted away. I've resealed the dip stick with the very hi-temp copper permatex. See how well that works.

I also just installed my new fish finder/depthsounder. It also will display my portable pocket GPS on its screen with a connector cable.

May the salmon beware.

OH, forgot to mention:

Joe's Carb in Seattle fixed the carb.
They overhauled it and have a testing facility where they flow check it with fuel.
They do all carbs, Auto, heavey equipment, aircraft, and marine.

They are alittle expensive but you can't beat their results with bench testing.

Going to try and attach pic of boat and truck.

Greg,
I have not used the finder out on the water yet.
If I did not get a good fix on this motor this time the whole thing was going to the auction next month.
And I was going to return the finder for a full refund. I got a deal on it but never took it out of the box.
I guess I'll be in the boating business at least a few more years.  ':usa:'

Now with a good motor, boat, GPS, and fishfinder/depthsounder I think that after we catch our limits of salmon and halibit we will go accross the line into Canadian waters and catch a limit of salmon & halibit over there. Of course we will get Canadian Fishing licenses.

Greg,
Got it all done.
No more oil leak.
Runs great.
Depthsounder/fishfinder works perfect.
GPS is now mounted in its own mount.
Everything is good to go for Salmon, Halibut, Cod and Seabass season in  ':p' July.

I don't know about that. Many of the fish I've seen on this forum from the Great Lakes are pretty big. Seen some photos of some big pike.

Speaking of fish size. Check out my post in the fishing pictures section.
That was printed in my local paper today.
The biggest one I ever caught was about 50 pounds.
Pacific Halibut are big fighters. Almost need a winch to get them off the bottem.
May fisherman out here carry handguns or a shot gun to shoot that thing before they bring them in the boat.
This being the boat technical section. I should mention that these pacific halibut if boated and come alive they can trash a boat quickly not to mention break peoples bones.
