60 million Walleye in Lake Erie.
« on: March 22, 2006, 02:18:58 am »

Allright guys, the ministry is already talking about raising quota's for commercial fisherman in lake Erie. I say NO WAY! to them. I realize that their catch limits were dropped back from 2001-2004, but the people working those boats are still making a living. If the ministry raises the catch limits for big fisheries at the first sign of growth, we'll be right back where we were a few years ago. 4 fish during spawn in the river. Slot size limits. I personally don't think that keeping a species population at a bare necessity size is the answer to anybody's problems. If any body should benifit from this new boom in fish population, it should be the sportfisherman. We practise and respect the laws of the land year after year, while big companies net millions of tons of fish, only to throw half of them back dead because they're not allowed to keep them. And those are the good guys! Those are the guys that are just following the rules! There have been criminal charges filed against several companies on more than one occasion for using illigal nets, or bringing in undersized fish. Not out just to bash the Commercial fisheries, but having many many walleye in our lakes also keeps other species of fish populations such as perch, bluegill, or even bass in check. Not to mention the invasive species like gobies that walleye actively feed on all year round. Our government needs to realize that to keep tabs on such a wonderful fishery, they need to leave it in the hands of people who respect it. Raise the limits for guys like you and me. Not big buisnesses that are just out to make a quick buck by exploiting our Great, Great Lakes. ':CA:'  ':usa:'

Thanks for reading guys!

I couldn't agree with you more.

Most fishermen sit at home in the winter, thinking about fishing.  Real fishermen go out and do it.

I actually found a website where the government is conducting a survey involving walleye populations. Asking average people how they think this should be handled. Only problem is that it didn't include lake erie. The site is aimed at improving populations and erie's pop. is booming.

I've been attending the outreach meetings every year except one since they started. Nothing we discussed at those meetings was taken to the proper channels. There was a closed door meeting in London last week and the 2 reps. for the commercial fishermen told the powers to be to give us Sport fishermen a larger slice of the Ontario quota. They also said the many of the commercial fishermen didn't want their quotas raised and look what has happened we the sport fishermen weren't given anything. There is only one answer as far as I'm conserned we the sport fishermen have to get organized like they are in the US and push our MPP to get off their A$$es and put presure on the MNR the same as the commercial fishermen have been doing. Until our MPP & MP realize how many Sport Fishermen (voters) there are they aren't going to do anything for us and even worse they are going to bring one of the Greatest Sport Fisheries in the world to the brink of extinction. The MNR & DNR are increasing quotas based on 1 years hatch (2003). As you can see they haven't impressed me with their scientific guess work as to the numbers of fish we have and I've never received an answer as to what is a safe number of fish to keep our fishery going man I'm PISSED!!!!!

Finally somebody who sees it like me! ':appl:'  What we need is a braniac to get a web site together to drum up support for this issue. I think that would be a good start anyway. If we get the word out like you say to pressure our mnr. There are alot of outdoorsman who would jump on the bandwagon in a heartbeat. Ther are alot of votes here like you say. Right on Bakie! I finally found somebody as pissed about this as I am. ''

Lets say 100 fisherman go walleye fishing. How many of them actually get there limit? I don't think very many fish good enough to limit out everytime they go.

People need food so commercial fishing gets that job done.

h2o<--I bet I'm in trouble now.

Up to this year as Bakie, I too attended the outreach programs by the MNR and in past meetings even organizations attended representing Sports Anglers from Ohio and Michigan. Last year when a rep from the gubermint stood up and said that the revenue created by the Commercial Fisherman was a valuable and high dollar source for the Province of Ontario, I knew there was not a chance in hell that anything was going to be done for the Sports Angler. The monies for license and permits and the fuel consumption and tax dollars and gubermint lobbiest monies from the Commercial Anglers goes into a different coffers than the license of the Sports Angler, whose dollars go into a general fund to support immigration and welfare programs and not back to the resources.

Should YOU as Canadians be po'd about this yep, Should visiting Anglers be po'd yep. You got Gubermint Reps as Mp's and MPP's right here, Ya can start werking on them. They live here and see the dollars generated for their communities by just driving down Riverside Drive.
Can someone come along and stir the pot and make changes maybe, but who? Can someone come in and create a voice for the Anglers by the Anglers, sure but who?  Bakie suggested banding together as sports anglers and in strength show the Gubermint that its voters that are Anglers. Ya visit one of the two Sportsmens Clubs here in Windsor and they can't even build a trully strong membership and if it wasn't for opening the food service to the public and the bar, membership would be in even worse shape. Talk to the Bassers and they got their agenda, MuskieHeads got their agenda, the Spooners for Salmon got their agenda, so even the organized groups got their own species specific agenda. So the first thing that has to be done I would reckon is get all these folks to wipe away their agendas, not an easy task I would guess. I would think your problem is going to be to get more than three people to agree on the same specific action and direction you want to go in.
But I have sat and listened to the battle cry's and the bitching year after year and the end result is as soon as the boats can be launched and the fishing season starts all is forgotten until ice up and cabin fever creeps in, then its time for the MNR to come into town to rile the troops and quietly leave town. And the circle starts again.

When that person is found who can do all and organize the anglers as one voice to be a representitive to the gubermint people, then maybe changes will be made and a difference will be seen. But remember that objective has to carry the sole basis of the future of sports angling for the next generation and the one after that.

I applaud you all for your anger and frustrations and the fact for the moment you want something done. But it ain't an easy fix or task.

I have to agree with you Snagman I've been listening to all the bitching in my shop and long before I opened it. And have been telling everybody to get involved or quit your bitching and it's always the same answer here well they aren't going to listen anyway. Or better yet yah you go and give em hell, the biggest problem in Canada as I see it is we are raised to be individuals to fight our own battles or in most cases just don't want to get involved. I had 2 meetings here at my shop with the LECBA from Ohio and representatives from our Charter boat association before the 1st outreach meeting with the MNR & believe me the Ohio boys are willing to help us organize here in the Western Basin or Erie but I personly don't agree with their agenda. To stop all commercial fishing on our side I grew up here my father was a commercial fisherman & after selling his share in a tug became assistant manager of the Fishermens Co-op in Kingsville until he retired I new all the old owners of commercial boats here in Kingsville and at one time use to stand up for them because they had some respect for our great fishery and were just trying to make a living to feed their families.
But these new generation owners (ethnic groups) have one thing in mind make all the money you can whether you destroy the best fishery in the world or not. There are a few of the older owners left which still care about our fishery & are happy with what they are making and are looking to the future. I was invited to a meeting with them 2 years ago when they hired  their own biologists and bean counters and were trying to establish a scientific quota system that was fair to all and wouldn't put our fishery at risk but even their team couldn't answer my biggest consern (how many fish are really here and what is a safe level to reduce them to). I told them at that meeting there were more Sport Fishermen Ontario than them and Sport Fishing generated more money than their fishery and if they didn't start looking to the future of our fishey that we as sport fishermen would get organized & put a hell of a lot more pressure on the Government  than they ever could & that most sport Fishermen were conserned with fish stocks for the future generations not just here and now. I think everybody can see where I'm going it's all about the future of our fishery but I'm just one person and am getting to old and sick of being lied to by our employee's (MNR) not to mention frustrated at what is going on to keep pushing much longer. It's time to do like most and just go fishing and leave it to someone else.
In my opinion the worst thing that could happen to this lake is to stop commercial fishing all together our MNR just needs to police  the commercial fishermen better and make them accountable for their actions.

PS YAH like I'm going to quit trying to save our fishery

LOL I hear ya Bakie....yep like I said each group be it from Ohio-NY-Pa-Mi-Ontario has their own agendas and its an agenda that only suits their needs and concerns.
Yea I can imagine those boyz from Ohio wanting to completely kill commercial fishing on Erie, since their Industry pretty much was killed on Erie by Ohio DNR from Cleveland to Toledo.
I agree the commercial fishing cannot and won't go away and it does need to be monitored unfettered more closely by the MNR.
Yep I respect your views as to the future of angling and our resources. Same as with Capt Georges and a few other of us who have come of age to know whats behind us and what needs to be done a head of us.

I like your last comment...Sorta like Charleton Heston when he told Washington and the powerful NRA 'Before I give up my guns, They will have to pry it from my cold dead fingers"

We can never, none of us, stop fighting for our fisheries!

Did yall know that up in Montreal Quebec, somewhere they net carp and tan their hides for clothing and other commercial items? I just read that somewhere and thought that was interesting. Not a point in this thread but a release of worthless knowledge that was in my thoughts hahahaha!!
