Solutions are what rectify situations.
I was just wondering what we here @ GLF could do to help.
That said, ponder a solution.
I hear the wet line as I can't get anything ready as it's complete and ready to CATCH....

It might help to find out how many guys are willing to band together to voice opinion. Mabey a post in the general discussion portion of this site. That way all members can view the current situation as guys like myself usually stick to 1 or 2 discussions. Some kind of pop up or headline at the top of each forum to reference guys from all over the great lakes so that we can band together. I'm trying here guys!

whoa nelly. many dont realize the ont gov gets royaties of 3.3 per cent of all commercial fish landed. . sport fishermen only get 1 per cent of quotas in ont. the lake is divided amongst state stake holders.. the problem is l erie has become a global trade fishing resource. we cannot tank a fishery for big business, BUT try telling your goverment agencys this.. it would be easier to get lucky with your ex-wife

Bakie and Outlaw along with many others in this area has been butting heads against the challenges of the fisheries and MNR at this end of Ontario for well over 20 years. They have spent many many hours fighting for the rights of the sports angler and the betterment of the fisheries, today as they approach the rocking chair age, there is needed new blood and youth energies to carry on the battles and the challenges for the future of the Great Lakes Fisheries.
Here it is 2006 and still after all these years the same discussions and problems still exist. Added to the old discussions is new ones that can and may affect the sports angler even more.
One is the ideas of implementing "Special Tournament Permits" for a gubermint fee. Now there are those who absolutely hate and have no use for tournaments, but what is not realized if this idea goes to regulation, the gubermint has just another control on sports anglers..but the hidden thing is it will also encompass and stop derbies that help underpriviledged kids. It will affect $$$ coming into the community. The hidden agenda is to reduce limits and possessions of certain species of fish...ie the 3 bass limit on Georgian Bay. The new Walleye regs for Southern Ontario inland lakes. Possible charges being laid for killing a fish.
Here in Ontario our big waters are bordered by NewYork/Pennsylvania/Ohio/Michigan/Minnesota. Presently several of the proposals for Tournament/Derby regulation is not based on whats good for Ontario, but what has been implemented by several border states. Who by the way has their own region specific agendas as does the MNR here.
I have registered complaints to the MNR and DNR's in Ontario and all the border States except Pennsylvania on the common Cormorant explosion/Problems. I even included photos to these department heads, showing flocks of Cormorants in areas they claimed didn't exist or was problem areas. For those complaints the MNR said basicly to mind my own business as they are in the middle of a 10 year study and that interest groups such as PETA has a lot of good input to this problem. PETA "YEA RIGHT". Anyone that does not believe PETA is not embedded in our gubermint depts better wake up! By the way the 3 states I contacted also was doing studies, but under an international agreement to Canadas Law that Cormorants are a protected species their hands were tied.
One of the chief MNR Biologisist who is behind the writings of these proposals had posted on other websites to stop emailing his office with complaints/concerns, because it was irritating. This individuals proposals are all based mainly on the writings of USA Biologists and OutDoorsman from Texas to Minnesota. What the heck does a Texan know about Ontario Fisheries. Also most of the findings and proposals are based on reports and studies from as far back as before 1984.
When the MNR at the end 2004 announced the release and implementation of the new URBAN FISHING program which took milllions of dollars to start, was only for Toronto and was an invite to help newly arrived paper canadians to go fishing. Thus the implemetation of the special edition of the Ontario Regs written in Chinese and in 2006/07 some more language specific written regs will be printed. Why did no dollars come to the Urban fishing of Windsor? Why if all newly arrived and older paper canadians are sent to english speaking courses paid for by your tax dollars, now gets regulations written in their originated countries language?
This invite by the MNR to email and voice your opinion to their website on new regulations is a smoke and mirror tactic. You write it makes you feel good, allows you to say you spoke your piece, you had your say and yet the regs have already been implemented. A Tylenol Fix for the masses.
Like what was asked earlier whats the solution, I still don't know, but like Bakie said if there had been one Him and others woulda already acted upon it.
I do know for a fact NO ONE is going to stop or slow down Commercial Fishing on Lake Erie and other bodies of water, as long as the Province gets its healthy cut of the the pie.
Whew just some things off my chest on stuff. Its a good thread and a lot of good thoughts.
Now for a Timmy's Double-Double!

One thing we need to do is put pressure on our MPP & MP's they don't seem to realize we the sport fishermen of Ontario out number the commercial fishermen by roughly 1000 to 1 and there is an election coming up. We contacted Bruce Crozier last year over the closed season on Erie and his reply at that time was he was more conserned with the commercial fishery since they employ many of his constituence & contributers would be my guess. He has no idea how much money the sport fishery in Ontario generates (23.7 million commercial fishermen, sport fishing industry 2.5 billion ) or the number of people it employs (voters). That is where to start with your Provincial & Federal Representatives but don't bash the commercial fishermen just make them aware of our numbers. The MNR in my opinion has been trying to keep the sport fishermen & commercial fishermen at each others throats so they won't have to make any major decisions of their own. I was invited to a meeting 2 years ago with the commercial fishermen & they've realized what has been going on over the years and also they are greatly out numbered by us. I don't want commercial fishing stopped all together because the junk fish will take over the lake ( Sheephead, Shad, Sawbellies, etc.) oh yah and the Muskie just kiddin George. I grew up on Erie and have been through the bad and the good times & yah Derek (56 yr fishing) more years then you are old hehe!!! Remember this just my opinion you don't have to agree but at least it's a starting place.

Derek ...A couple hard boiled eggs and a brewski and us old boyz can be ripe lmao!!!
Yea we all been to bat a few times over the years and yep because of the sport and the love of outdoors we keep swinging.
Bakie makes a very valid point...chatter it up with those Mps and MPP's, these are the locals that was voted in to be your voice..Hammer them with your views and ideas and they are the ones who know about voters and numbers and dollar allocations!
Outlaw makes excellent points as well...don't go into their offices screaming shut down the commercial fishing it won't work..but appraoch your gubermint peoples with what you would like to see done.
Yes I am a tad bit older Derek and have looked for ya several times in the am down at the marina...Ya see a White Chevy Pickup Z71 pull in that could well be me

its dealing with a morally bankrupt goverment. mnr basically do the math. the ont. goverment makes the decisions. good or bad. its a lopsided affair. the only club that has clout to fight is ofah.. of course we all have opinions and should as being human beings living in a free society.. its about money and power guys. to bad so sad. corruption at its highest point the prostitution of our resources. if it were carp believe me there would be limits on them also.. join a group get involved. its a totally political and tastless game but until sportsmen truly get involved we will lose the battles. . there has to be common ground somewhere
