Reelfoot Lake, TN Part 1
« on: April 06, 2006, 08:43:22 pm »

Some info on ReelFoot Lake: It’s a natural lake of 15,000 acres and history says that the lake was formed when the region subsided after the New Madrid earthquakes of 1811–1812, and that the Mississippi River flowed backward for twenty-four hours to fill it. Some dispute this but that’s the story. Until 2003, Reelfoot was the world's only legal commercial fishery for crappie.
My adventure to Reelfoot lake in Lake county Tennessee started with a ring of the alarm @ 2:30 am on Sunday April the 2nd.  I had the truck ready with the exception of my clothes and food which I placed in the door way so that I wouldn’t forget them. I had to meet the fellas in Cincy at 6:00 am. An hour and ½ into the drive I realize I forgot my clothes and cooler. To late to turn around. I didn’t want to keep 4 guys waiting. After some quick hello’s we were on our way. All 5 five of us in a van.
After a quick stop at Walmart to get me some clothes we arrived at Reelfoot Resort around 3:00 pm and quickly registered, settled in the cabin and had a look around.
Here we are at the resort and the boats docked at the main lodge.

The weather looked good and we were anxious to get out on the lake.. The crappie action was heating up and we were having a good time and then the weather started turning for the worse. We got off the lake, high winds and rain shortly followed. Then it got very calm and quite.

The wind was howling and soon it started to hail. Everyone’s vehicle had hail damage.

The next day we heard the bad news and the wind made it impossible to get out in the jon boats. The lake’s average depth is 5.2 feet with some areas 12 feet. Lots of the cypress stumps are just below the water line. This is what makes the jon boat popular on the lake.

We decided to spend the day site seeing and cross the nearby Mississippi river on a ferry to check out Missouri. That’s one muddy river. Makes the Ohio look like holy water.

This thing was lying on the back steps when I went out for and evening walk. One of the fishermen killed it. It’s either a cottonmouth which is very poisonous or a harmless watersnake.
