Detroit River Sturgeon
« on: April 22, 2007, 11:33:53 pm »

Well folks it finally happened for me, since I first heard about the sturgeon in Lake St Clair, and seen other fellas hooking up with them, being dragged around the river out onto the lake and back, I wanted to catch one.
21 April 2007 launched at the City Marina in Windsor and headed out to about 100 yards above the sturgeon hole and set up to make the drift vertical jigging for the walleye. I dropped my lure over the side and felt it hit bottom, I lifted once and let it fall and then again only it felt hung up and I thought aww great snagged already, so I got up and pulled on the line, then I aimed the rod tip at the line thinking no worries I'll just break it off...big problem I had tied direct to the jig with the braided line...no chance of breaking it off..so put the trolling motor on high and headed towards the snag hoping to get above it to free my jig, when all of a sudded the boat turned on its own and headed over towards the front of peche island, only then I realized I had a big fish.
I battled the fish for twenty-five minutes when it swam into the current and tired out came to the top. I carefully tailed it and brought it in the boat for pictures and a quick release. My oh My what a beauty it measured out to just a tad bit over 60 inches and on the scales weighed out at right around 80 pounds.
Guys what a feeling to be holding something in your arms that was breathing and was born over 100 years ago. So cool!
Thats it the pictures are in my album if ya care to see it!

Equipment Used:

Quantum Titanium Energy PTi 10 spinning reel
10lb test Power-Pro Hi Viz Yellow
Quantum Tour edition 6 foot medium spinning rod
Milts Brand Tackle 3/8oz BallJig Black Nickel Hook (Chartruese)
Generic Plastic Minnow (4 inch) thumper tail
Dipped in Spike-It Chartruese Dip & Glo
Covered and Soaked in KicknWalleye

I do not use live bait as a tipper or sweet meat until june. All artificial!

Caught in the bottom of its mouth...weird feeling a sturgeons mouth like running your hand in a rubbery slimey hose.

Thats the run down on equipment used.

Some people are like Slinkies. Not really good for anything, but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs.

Congrats.  Is that the biggest freshwater fish you've ever caught?  I can't imagine there's any fresh water fish much bigger than that.

Most fishermen sit at home in the winter, thinking about fishing.  Real fishermen go out and do it.

OH HECK NO!!!! I will always chase the Lake Love of my Life..."BASS"
The Sturgeon was just a bonus!! I get back from Ohio the first week of May..Load the Astro and its Michigan here I come to whack a few basses.

Yes Ice that is the biggest fresh water fish I have caught. The thing is and it hit me after I released it, but I was fortunate enough to hold something living and breathing that was born over 100 years ago! Thinking about it thats quite humbling.

I have seen guys hook up with Sturgeon much much bigger and always thought man that would be a blast and I wasn't disappointed.
