Pro's/con's - aluminum or fiberglass boats
« on: April 20, 2005, 01:39:37 pm »

As a bunch of you guys know I'm looking for a boat...the other day I checked out a sweet boat but didn't go for it because it was fiberglass....what are the pro's/con's of fiberglass compaired to aluminum???

If it makes a difference I fish mainly here but go up north to my Buddies cottage in Quebec a couple times a year and will be bringing the boat up there....it's one of those rocks everywhere types of northern lake....

Let's hear it boys!!!! ( and ladies if there are any here!!)

fiberglass...is a pain in the ass to work with if you want my opinion.....I would be very carefull around rocks......I just spent the whole summer last year putting a new floor in our boat....and crap like that....and it is horrible to work with....and  my boat is soooooo heavy....aluminum boats aren't as heavy....but you would still need to be carefull around rocks thats for sure

That's one thing I was worried about, the weight....Where I go is around 10 or 11 hours of driving....real bad on the gas!!!

well.....our boat was nice and light when we got it gutted....then we put everything back in ...and I can't even lift the front end of the trailer....but then again.....some moron allowed water to collect in it and freeze all winter.....so it might possibly have water trapped under the floor somewhere at the moment...im not to sure....time to cut a hole and look...lol

Chrispy....I'd look at a CrestLiner or Lund in the 18 foot plus range. Stay within the 150 hp range like an opti-max.

These two style rigs can be geared up with downriggers and a musky mast for planner boards and even has room for a small kicker motor.

You can get the full windshield deal...great for winds and waves.

This of coarse is just my opinion, but for the fishing around here both covers everything you would want to do, from Bass Tournaments to Musky Hunting to fishin for the bows over in Lake Erie.

$15,000.00 will get you one hell of a rig thats for sure!

20 Foot DEEP V Cuddy here, and yes, It's just way to bloody heavy. It makes for a much much better and stable ride on the water, But all that fiber and everything else is just as heavy as cast iron.  Huge pain trailoring, launching etc. Thats one of the reasons why i want to get rid of ours, I want a nice cheap little aluminum lund or alumacraft. For fishing, stick with aluminum. Fishing and family, fiberglass... Thats my 2c.

That's exactly what I was looking for Brother!!!!  The one I just looked at was a Skeeter, but had all the same features you just described....

I also thought that the money I was going to spend would get me a nice boat but around here it seems that I will have to spend another $5000.00 to get what I want....

I don't think the wife will go for that!!!  LOL!!!  She gave me PERMISSION to spend the 15K, can't go and ask for more now!!  LMAO!!!

i got a 20' deep-V too, with all fiberglass floor.  nice for cleaning up while fishing (hose it down) but very very heavy.  I just got a marina slip to leave it in the water, it sucks trailering.

Chrispy contact "Linda" out at DeerBrook Marina outside of Belle River. She just might have a lead on a rig for you!
Just a thought!

ask for more money.  never go cheap on your boat.  aluminum is better for rough water, for the fact that you wont get stress cracks.

I got a 17' fiberglass and I like the extra weight for trolling on the big water
I find it gives a smoother ride and handles the rough stuff well
and 17' not too bad for trailering

Aluminum's the way to go on freshwater. If you hit something you get a dent not a crack like fiberglass for the most part. Better on gas, easier to trailer and who wants to be out when it's rough anyways. Not fun holding on all the time and concentrating on your balance. Sorry just not my cup of tea. When it comes down to it they both have there -'s and +'s so it's what you want. Myself, would prefer Aluminum. You get more boat for the $'s. It's easier to care for 2.

h2o<--says what ever you get it will be nice.

also what do you plan to use it for?  if it's torunaments, you want a boat that can handle the rough stuff when you have to go fishing
