« on: April 22, 2005, 07:32:17 pm »

Ok, I am going stir crazy wanting to try this new rod/reel. Now what guys? No boat, 10 minutes from Lakeshore Marina, Belle River, brand new casting setup but no tackle.

What do i need to pick up to get me started and where can I fish from shore please? I want bass but that don't start for a couple of months it seems, this lake fishery is totally new to me around here.

I'm itchin but lost at sea.... ':boat:'

QMaze,
Start off with some crappie lures and crappie tubes..Head over to Belle River Marina and toss em around the docks where no boats are doceked!!!

Stop in at R&D tackle and pick up a Woodys Bait and throw for some those Northern Pike.

White Bass are starting to move in and stoney points a good place out of the Thames to throw a inline spinner for them babies!

If you're using a casting set up I would suggest getting some Rapalas or strike king wild shiners.  these baits will catch pike and bass, so you can just say you're targeting pike.  If casting tackle is brand new to you then go to the back yard or a park and practice casting with bell sinkers.  And fish off of the rock wall at belle river marina.

First of all you want to buy tackle that your line will handle and you should take the line off it's junk, on those combo's if that's what you got. Tell me more of the outfit you have, it says on the side of the rod. Like medium, lite, heavy. and the side of the reel will say the line pounds. Is it a two piece outfit?  Put smoke FireLine on. So let us know these facts. Is it a spinning outfit or baitcaster? If it's a closed face reel than FireLine won't work well on that. How much did it cost? That will tell alot.

OH WoW nice outfit. It sounded like those combo's from K-mart for $20.00.  You'll love it. I just want to make sure as I can't find the reel online.   Is it a Bait caster or Spinning outfit.  Bait caster has eyelets on top of rod Spinning has bigger eyelets on bottom of rod.

h2o<--I found the PT665F but not PTC665F let me know

OK found the reel,, you have a Baitcaster,, cool. Get  a few #5 Mepps Aglia's plain ( no bucktail ). in silver and gold color. Some Bomber Long A's, And Shad raps are good. It's for heavier baits what you have. Spinner terminator baits are killier. Start with those.  Use the Silver Mepps on sunny days and the Gold Mepps on Cloudy days.

h2o<--use that and your good to go on a start-up collection of the tackle box full of stuff you'll have in no time.

Cool, thanks h2o. That was funny, $20 combo. I've learned a lot from drift fishing salmon that it takes good equipment to catch more fish, not always true but the majority. I have built a few Sage 11.5 drift rods for the West Coast fishery and there is quite a difference in sensitivity with higher end graphites.

But just wanted to go with factory rod to start out.

Heres the rod link.

PM Chrispy..I will definately get in touch with you if weather permits and I head out tomorrow. Only 2 boats in the marina so would be fun flipping around the docks to see whats below. Not sure what the regulations are for fishing off the docks but can easily cast to them from the breakwall.

Just got home from there. Big, brown wave action, really churning up bottom.
