Sinking or floating line?
« on: April 15, 2005, 02:34:26 pm »

So what do you flyfisherman prefer, floating or sinking line? I am new to the flyfishing arena, and I do have a flyrod/reel combo with sinking line. Would a beginning flyfisherman be better off using sinking line or would floating line be the way to go?

My weakness in fishing would be fly fishing but I would say the main line floats, and the tippet sinks, or floats depending on what your going after and water dept.

Hi,
As for a beginner, I would recommend a floating line. First of all, most of your trout fishing will be with a dry fly, and you can't do it with a sinking line. I always use only floating line. If you need a line to sink, let's say to fish with a nymphs or streamers, you can either put some split shots on your floating line (actually on your leader), which will make the tip of your floating line to go down, or you can make those flies heavier by adding some lead wire to them. So, I can't see a real reason to use sinking line, unless you will fly fish from the boad in some really deep waters.

That's what I was thinking of doing victorv, since this reel came with sinking line on it. This boat harbor I fish at I guess every now and again has a steelhead or two run in there, and the water gets to at least 15 or so feet from what I gather, so it couldn't hurt I guess. I'd like to get some floating line though, just so I have it and learn from it.
