The Chicago River is a fabulous place to cruise from the downtown canyon's of skyscrapers, thru the neighborhoods up the North Branch leading to the wilderness along the North Shore Canal. It's hard to believe that there are no boat ramps, marinas, drop off and pick-up docks, fuel availability, nothing. Once you are on the beautiful river, you can't find a place to dock or get services, you are trapped on your boat. It wasn't always that way. There used to be a few public marinas with gas pumps, etc. But they have all disappeared. The Chicago River Port has declined from being the largest/busiest port on the Great Lakes to being at the bottom of the list of services available. How can we lobby to get public boat ramps, slips, and marinas with fuel and other services on the Chicago River? Does anyone know of a slip that I can get on the Chicago River? The last real marina with services closed this year and left me with no chioce but to apply for a slip in one of the harbors. I would prefer the river because the weather does not prevent boating. We have had some of our best cruises on the river during rain storms and when there were smalll craft warnings on Lake Michigan. If the Lake was calm enough then we could easily go thru the locks. If I get a slip in one of the harbors, then we will only be able to go boating on those few occasions when the Lake is calm.
