Ice fishing tips
« on: November 17, 2007, 08:40:23 am »

1. Going with a horizontal jig will increase your catch ratio over a vertical jig. Also use that with a wax worm. Thread the waxie from the head to the tail. That way you'll avoid covering the hook tip with the little helmet the waxie has on it's head. That can stop the hook from penetrating.

2. Also a #8 Tru-Turn hook with a minnow hooked by the dorsal works wonders over standard hooks. The Tru-Turn hook has a cam like action that will help you land more fish.

3. 4lb. FireLine is ok but 2lb. is even better. I've landed 4/5 lb. Smallies with 2lb. so don't think it's to small of a line.

4. Don't be shy, ask other fisherman how there doing. Ask if they mind if you fish in the same area and how far away you should be. I never care if anyone wants to fish close to where I am. It helps keep the action going.

5. A very good idea is to take a branch out with you to mark your hole not only might you save someone from getting a wet foot but also helps you find the same hole if you return, snow and blowing snow will cover your hole.

5 1/2. If you use a spud which I like, chop your hole in a inverted funnel shape, choping the bottom edges smooth, this helps you land fish as they slide right up the hole.

6. Remember a drop of water icefishing is like fire. Once your wet your miserable. Stay as dry as you can.

7. I use a plastic grocery bag to cover my foot just before I put my boot on. You'll be amazed how that helps keep your feet warmer and as long as your feet are warm you can stay out forever. Just tuck the bag in before you tie your boot. If you get new boots get ones rated for the artic if poss. Pay the extra for the better boot by all means.

8. Tip-ups, Don't put the bait to low as Pike look up. Say in 10 f.o.w. put the bait down 3 feet. But play with that.

9. MOST IMPORTANTLY: If your not getting any action-----MOVE-------so many refuse to move and they go home saying I got a few and not a limit.

10. To Conclude Always ask the bait store for areas they know fish are getting caught. They get more reports than carter has pills. They want to help. Catching more fish sells more bait. Always ask for a ice report to, like are there any areas to avoid from dangerous conditions. Beware of any springs that DO exist on Lakes, Always use caution especially exploring new areas. Walk 50 feet and check ice thickness. Do a search on Ice fishing Saftey, study that and adhere to the rules and have a great time this season. Don't be to excited on getting out to early. Make sure conditions are safe.
