I went out Sunday with my son for about 2 hours. We ended up with 12 perch, mostly dinks, some 7” & 8” & 1 that was a little over 10”, & a 17” pike. It was my son’s first time catching a fish through the ice & it was also his first time catching a pike. That’s 3 fishing firsts for him this year & all happened on Houghton Lake (he caught his 1st walleye back in July).
On Monday we went out for about an hour & half (my son wasn’t so into it as he was the day before). We caught 5 perch that were all dinks. We fished the same spot (a little over a ½ mile out in the north end of East Bay) but didn’t have much action. Ice was 9” to 11” thick with snowmobiles everywhere. Most fish were caught on a jig & minnow, with a few coming on the jig & wax worm or just plain hooked minnow. The pike was caught on a jig & minnow with no action on the tip-up. All were caught in 8 to 8.5 fow.
My son’s 1st fish through the ice.

My son’s first pike.
