New to Michigan need fishing help/tips
« on: July 12, 2008, 09:09:50 am »

Hello, I'm new to Michigan moved up from Texas and now fish Kent Lake in Kensington Metro Park pretty much every Sunday and I've yet to have any luck catching anything.

I've been using soft plastics mostly Berkley Powerworms 4" and 7" in Red Shad and Pumpkin Seed rigged up "Texas" style hook, swivel and slip weight and have had no luck.

Any advice you could share with me I would greatly appreciate it, I feel like I'm fishing Texas style and I need to learn Michigan style.  Am I using the wrong type of lures?  Am I rigged up wrong and should switch to a Carolina rig or three-way swival and seperate my weight line from hook line?

Welcome to Glf buddy. Your biggets problem is that you are fishing kent lake Smiley Its one tough pond to fish this late in the summer unless you like carp.  There is nothing wrong with your set up, it's just the lake is not good for much this far into summer time due to weeds, high water temps and an over obudance of natural food.

Stop by the Park office on Buno Rd. and ask for a contour map of the lake. That will give you the drop offs and depths. They also have naturalists on staff who will gladly tell you the "hotspots" for whatever season you go there.

There is one big hole on the west end up from the freeway. Work the drop off all the way around it. Use a drop shot. Fish 8-25 foot.

Kent Lake is a tough lake to fish. It's the 2nd most fished inland lake in Michigan so the fishing pressure is heavy on most weekends.

The best place for numbers of bass is the portion of the lake on the other side of I-96. Fish along the drop by the freeway. I've done best with a darter head jig with either a 4" worm or 3" or 4" grub. I also like jerk baits. Perch colored crankbaits & minnow baits have done very well for me. My favorite lure for that lake is a perch Storm Wiggle Wart, which I haven't been able to find anywhere ever since Rapala bought Storm out. I've caught my biggest Michigan Largemouth out of that lake on a wiggle wart.

I was going to fish Kent today but I was too lazy to get up. I might head out there in 2 weeks.

Here's the link to my report the last time I fished Kent Lake.
