newbie needs help
« on: September 25, 2008, 06:14:33 pm »

Hi all,

This is my first post here and my first year fishing since childhood.
I have fished all over the Huron river area this year and have caught alot of SM & LM. Really enjoying fishing again just like a kid Grin.

I was reading the DNR fishing report and they talked about steel head in the huron river. I have been searching for places to fish - no boat but will wade or shore fish if possible.

So far I see Pointe Mouillee state game area and Lake Erie metro park are down by the mouth of the Huron, has anyone fished these areas?

Am I barking up the wrong tree trying for steelhead with no boat?
Is it wasted effort to fish for Steelies in the river?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Welcome aboard Craig.

I haven't fished those areas but have been wanting to fish the Huron for some steelies. You can fish for them near the Flat Rock damn & a few other places down river from there.

Here's more info that might help with Huron steelhead. http://www.questoutdoors.net/locs/michigan/huron_mi/

Sorry for the late report been crazy busy.

Anyway fished all over from Flat Rock Dam to mouth. We (2 of us) caught 2 perch totalling about 2 ounces in a 10 hour day. Fun but disappointing.

last tuesday one of my other buddys went to flat rock dam before sun rise and caught a 30-36" steel head (he claims).

The dam seems to be the place to fish as far as I know and everyone seems to be using spawn bags.

Thanks for all the help and the Welcome

The Flat Rock Damn should be getting loaded with steelhead soon if not already. It can get very crowed with fisherman there, especially in the spring.

No. Steelhead don't die after spawning like salmon do. I'm sure that some of those were stocked but not all of them.

You learn something new everyday. Always thought steelheads died off as well.
